Comments from www.deadlists.com
Dark Star cuts off sooner on some tapes in circulation. ****Need to verify if beginning of Clementine
is clipped or not and the length of Dark Star - my DAT tape has it cut off early on, but a cassette I
have goes on for a minute or two longer and then it cuts off too. Need to check if it is Feedback as
I have it labeled or Space as per Gordon. DeadBase lists a Jam > before Clementine, but in the back
they say Jam#, #Clementine and that the tape cuts in on an announcer saying "...crank it up, lay it
down, Grateful Dead". Glenn Gillis says he has the jam and its more like 45 mins (I think the Jam
was not on the GDH and tapes that trace back to it)**** |

NOTES:
- Most of Cryptical Envelopment (trk 1) is cut.
- Alligator (trk 6) may be missing the first few beats.
- Dark Star is probably missing the first 10-20 seconds.
- Splice/tape flip at 3:45 in Death Don't Have No Mercy.
- It?s not known how much is missing from the end of Lovelight. Deadlists states
total time as 15:08.
- Electrical hum/clicking noise, varying in intensity, in left channel from
Cryptical Envelopment to beginning of Alligator.
- The last 28 seconds of Feedback is patched from another source with the same
lineage.
- Shntool and CD Wave were used to correct sector boundary errors and for edits.

The above splices from the alternative 2-Track sources were edited

The short story:
1) I removed the whine (~8000 kHz tone at about +25 dB) from this show
that was present with the source reels using Sonic Foundry's Noise
Reduction algorithm, as I did with the earlier uploaded Port Chester
shows (2/18, 2/21, 2/24). For an explanation of the noise and how I
removed it, see http://www.mailbag.com/users/orf/notch.html
2) There are a couple of dropouts/glitches which I have
cleaned up as well as I can. These occurred when the DAT tape was
"ripped" to disk.
3) This show is as good as you're gonna get as far as I know because of
the NR and the excellent remastering from the original reels!
4) I've kept in all the intersong tuning/whatever. I figure others can
edit them down if the wish. I like having it there, sometimes funny
things are said and done :) plus you can always just hit FFWD on your CD
player remote to get to the next song!

Notes:
At least 3 other SHN versions of this show circulate as of
April 14, 2003. All of these copies suffer from unknown numbers
of digital audio extractions and various remastering attempts.
This seed is a direct copy from DAT WBOTB (11/1996) source.
No whine removal, no noise reduction, no remastering, no fades,
jarring reel flips left intact. |

Comments:
* Second Encore
- sbd was pitched to match the aud source. The pitched varied thoroughout and for the longer songs
multiple pitch corrections for different segments were required. There are still artifacts, especially
before reel or cassette flips.
- Cool Edit Pro used for pitching, crossfades, etc... with highest accuracy settings
- there is little audio above 8kHz on this sbd so it pales in comparison to the better E72 boards available
- d1t1 (fades in and out) 1:06-1:09 hiss level changes briefly 5:37-5:40 overload distortion (as Keith mixed in higher?)
- d1t4 some overload like distortion at times when everyone plays chords together and on Bob's vocals
- d1t5 & d1t6 some distortion on Phil's bass and Garcia's guitar and vocals at times
- d1t7 overload distortion most promient on harmonica
- d1t8 mild overload distortion occasionally on vocals, piano, guitars
- d1t9 spots where bass and vocals have mild overload distortion
- d2t1 residual speed variation before some reel flips
- d2t2 mixes changes at the start
- d2t3 some distortion and a few very brief partial drop outs. 2:51 volume briefly drops
- d2t4 distortion on vocals and some of phils chords
- d3t1 reel flip cross faded with aud
- d3t2 reel flip cross faded with aud
- d3t5 opening notes cross faded from aud, hiss level different than preceeding tracks, more "aud" like ambiance

WAV was edited in Soundforge 4.0 (crossfading of reel cuts between
songs, no music was disturbed except for Sugar Magnolia)
WAV>SHN via CDWAV 1.53>MKW 0.97b
The songs from the reels were originally edited down to DAT very
tightly, almost no banter is present in this version.
Known Flaws: the first few notes of Sugar Magnolia were missing
and were patched in from the circulating Gans CD source.
The following spots were edited using pencil tool in Soundforge
(small bits of analog static removed):
d1t1, 2:18 - left channel click - smoothed, still slightly audible
d1t1, 2:20-2:23 - left channel static - smoothed, still slightly
audible
d1t06, 2:12 - pop - fixed

d2t05, 3:37 - right channel click - fixed
d2t05, 4:13 right channel click - fixed
d2t05, 04:18 - right channel static - smoothed, still audible
d2t05, 04:45 - right channel static - fixed
d2t05, 04:00-05:00 - some other static, smoothed, but still audible
d2t05, 5:05 - right channel click- still slightly audible

d3t01, 0:38 - right channel click - fixed
d3t01, 8:06, 8:11 - right channel crackles - fixed
d3t01, 26:29 - right channel click - fixed
There are a few other minor analog anomalies that were left alone:
d1t01, 2:02 click in right channel
d1t01, 2:26 slight pop
d1t07, 3:48 click
d2t01, 6:00 faint click

primary source: SBD>MR>C>D>CD>EAC>SHN (provides most of sets 2 and 3)
secondary source: AUD>?>C>CD>EAC>SHN (provides all of set 1 plus patches in sets 2 and 3)
Caveat:
--The audience recording that supplies the first set is fairly decent through Tennessee Jed, though the quality drops to quite poor once BTW begins, and never improves for the rest of the first set.
Notes:
--the tape was stopped between songs on the audience master, leaving many minor cuts at the beginnings of songs during the first set.
--minor tape stoppage at 5:50 in Bird Song
--Bertha is provided by the audience recording
--aud patch in O1 from 12:23 to 13:57; (from 13:41 to 13:57, a higher gen aud was needed for the patch); there is still some missing material here at 13:57, as both the AUD and SBD sources had overlapping tape/reel flips.
--the first few seconds of Cold Rain are clipped
--aud patch provides the end of Sugar Magnolia
--the encore, OMSN, is provided by the audience recording (first few notes are clipped)
--Sound Forge was used for normalization, minor pitch corrections, and other edits

Jay's Notes:
Digitally Remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com. Completed on November 9, 2005.
I don't know where I got this show, and unfortunately, there was no text file with it. It does appear to be from the same source as the one on archive.org. The source on archive is listed as a cassette master. Spectral analysis cleary reveals two analog generations, making this, most likely, a cassette master>>cassette rather than a cassette master source.
There were many rough trasitions between songs, most apparently from the stopping and starting of a tape machine. Most of these transitions were edited to make them less harsh.

As of Sept 00, this copy is just entering circulation.
For more info on the source of this copy, read Jim Powell's comments below.
.shn and .md5 created by Mike Hall (myko@well.com)
>From Jim Powell:
"OK, I just got the master of the DeadLists Edition of Roosevelt
Stadium, Jersey City 8/6/74: a digital copy of the master SBD reels
with the 20 second flip cut in Scarlet Begonias patched with an
excellent AUD master. This is the entire show including Seastones, in
perfect condition, on 4 CDs.
...
We owe thanks especially to Hugh Barroll, who passed along CDs of a
digital copy of the master SBD; to Ihor Slabicky, who supplied a copy of
his AUD master of the show; and to Dave Greenberg, who used Soundforge
to patch the tape flip in Scarlet Begonias on the SBD and produce our
masters. Noah Weiner also helped with the project, forwarding a copy of
Barry Glassberg's AUD master."
and later Jim reiterated:
"The lineage of this copy of 8/6/74 is MR > DAT > CDs. It is the
entire show, uncut, including Seastones (and the encore). The flip chop
in Scarlet is expertly patched with excellent AUD. It very markedly
upgrades the copy that came around a year or so ago, as well as all
other circulating copies. Until and unless they release this as a Dick's
Picks, and do as good or better a job than we have with the patch, this
is the ultimate copy of this alltime great show, hands down, no shit."
**********
FURTHUR: More work was done on this by David Gans using Sonic Solutions.
A digital copy of Ihor Slabicky's tape and the cd's from Dave Greenberg were
used to further patch the reel flips in Eyes of the World and Truckin'.
David also edited the reel starts and stops between songs.
Nothing that was said was removed.
What we have here is the *FINAL* copy of this, my first show, to be circulated!
These .shn's have been generated from the discs David Gans made.
MD5's have been generated for both the .wav and .shn files.
Jim said it first, " .. this is the ultimate copy of this alltime great show,
hands down, no shit." |

NOTES
Flaw-free, from a digital perspective. All the "Dead Air"
has been cut from between tracks. There is some amplifier
hum that is audible (particularly at the beginning of Stella
Blue) and it sounds like someone kicks an amp 3:35 into
Might As Well. There is a brief overlap from disc 2 to disc
3 (Phil pounds out the intro to the TOO at the very end of
disc 2, and disc 3 starts right there with that intro). |

The Post Drums Pre-FM recording is degraded and flawed. I doubt that it is a Pre-FM Master Reel recording, but then again, stranger things have happened. The ONLY reason I included it was to circulate the complete show. As for the SBD, David Gans said that the Post-Drums segment was unusable.

Bertha Remaster of the Serafin Master Reel source.
SBD>>MR>>DAT>>SHN>>DAW(Bertha)>>CDA/SHN - Sound A+
Notes:
Digitally remastered using a custom built, Dual-DAW, nicknamed Bertha, by jashley@deadacated.com on 10/30/2002.
The Serafin source was completely reassembled prior to processing. Retracking was done using CDWave after all processing was completed. The wavs were tested for SBEs prior to encoding to SHN.
The fade between d3t03 and d3t04 was done by Serafin or others and was left as-is due to no overlap being provided. This is the reason I do not use fades between discs. All of my disc changes are at track markers to make for seamless rejoining of tracks when transferring to larger media.

Notes:
I received this show in a trade from the taper, Jim Quirk.
This is an excellent FOB of a classic 1984 show.
The sound is clear and upfront, with vocals clearly defined and
an excellent bottom end.
This is a grate complement to the crispy SBD already in circulation.
Many thanks to Jim Quirk for the seed discs and for taping.
Flaws: There is a level decrease in Bucket at 3:48 levels return to normal
at 4:11.

Transfer: MSC playback on Nakamichi DR2 > gold connector shielded 3ft RCA monster cable > Audiophile 2496 soundcard /P4 2 GHz > recorded as 24 bit/48 KHz WAV using Wavelab 5.
Mastering: Wavelab 5.0 (24/48 files rendered to 16 bit/44.1 KHz using Waves L3 Multimaximizer with hi resolution CD rendering settings (threshold -2 dB / ceiling -0.1 dB / type I dither / ultra shaping) > tracking with CDWAV 1.9 > 16 bit FLAC.Comments:
Last performances of "Tons of Steel" and "La Bamba".
Thanks to the provider of the MSCs who for various reasons wishes to remain anonymous.
Overall this recording has a lot more high end than the source listed on the archive as being a MSC >DAT transfer. This is likely the MSC that was used on that DAT transfer as the "Healy Weirdness" described during Desolation Row corresponds to a poorly patched tape flip. There are no dropouts in La Bamba on this recording.
Flaws-
This recording has the nasty digital static at the beginning of the show (Stranger) coming through with what sounds like Bob's vocal mic as his voice is all distorted while you can hear Jerry and Brent's ok.
Tape flip during the first verse of Desolation Row patched from a similar sounding performance (no drums, just guitars/voices) on 5/10/87 using Wavelab.
Tape flip durin Space was very short and crossfaded into near-imperceptiblity. |
